What is a bucky in radiology?
A bucky is the device that holds the X-ray film cassette (or digital detector) and the anti-scatter grid during an exposure. It sits under the X-ray table or inside the vertical chest stand. The name comes from Gustav Bucky, who patented the moving anti-scatter grid in 1913. Today, “bucky” usually refers to the whole cassette-holding assembly: the tray, the grid and the holder.
Key bucky terminology
Bucky stand — the vertical stand that holds the cassette tray and grid upright for standing patients (chest, abdomen, spine views). Available in fixed, mobile and wall-mounted versions.
Bucky tray — the drawer or holder that the cassette slides into. It moves with the grid during exposure.
Bucky grid — the anti-scatter grid (typically 10:1, 103 lines/inch, 180 cm focal length) that blocks scattered radiation.
Reciprocating bucky — a grid that moves during exposure so the lead lines blur and do not appear on the image.
Cassette — the light-tight holder for X-ray film, commonly 14″ × 17″ or 17″ × 17″.
AEC — automatic exposure control; the bucky stand may include a probe panel window for AEC sensors.
Why the bucky matters for image quality
When an X-ray beam passes through the body, some radiation scatters in all directions. Scattered radiation reaches the film randomly and makes the image hazy. The bucky grid absorbs most of this scatter, while the reciprocating motion blurs out the grid’s own lines. The result is a sharp, readable image — which is why every standard bucky stand in radiology includes a grid.
